Max Lange Gambit

I have shown you the opening move for my “Hansen” gambit and now I would like to use a litte time on other possible move, which is good to know if you at some point like to try out this line. The most interesting line I think, and at some point very important to know, is the Max Lange gambit.

1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.Nf3 Nc6 (or 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4) 4.Bc4 Nf6 (see the diagram #1)

Now the normal moves are: 5.e5 d5.

Instead of going into the Scotch line, White can move 6.Bb5 Ne4. But I am going to look at the Max Lange gambit line: 6.exf6 dxc4. (see the diagram #2)

Max Lange Gambit - diagram 2

This is the main position for the Max Lange gambit. Black has two pawns in Whites center line (d4 and c4) the E line is open, and if we look at the position, it very much looks like that Black is standing good.

Truly said, White has been a bit ambitious, but even so this line is seen at strong levels and recognized as playable.

The question is: What do White play here?

Well, there are 3 lines here – lines A, B and C. I am not going to spent all day on them. They are very long theoretical lines. But I am going to give a few moves here for your study.

A) 7.0-0 Qxf6 8.Bg5 Qf5 (also possible is 8…. Qg6 9.Re1+ Be6) The other two lines are seen more often.

B) 7.Qe2+ Be6 8.fxg7 Bxg7 9.Ng5 Qd5

C) 7.fxg7 Qe7+ 8.Qe2 Qxe2+ 9.Kxe2 Bxg7

Which of these 3 lines you should like most I can’t say, but I have to say that YOU NEED to look at these lines if you want to try out my Hansen gambit.

also possible is 7.c3, but anyway i don’t think
this Max Lange gambit is good for White, fundamentally.

This ‘Hansen’ gambit (which already was known as variation
in the Scotch gambit theory) is a good one, however,
Black will often play …Ke8?! do avoid another check
afte Qxc5. But indeed Qh5+! then is a good move.
