Chess endings: Rook Versus Pawns

Last week I posted an article about chess endings rook versus a pawn. In this post we are going to focus on endings where the weaker side has more than one pawn – usually two or three.

There is a general rule for this type of ending… The rule is there is no rule and concrete position and calculation decides.

White to move

In positions like this there is a principle saying that two connected pawns on the 6th (or the 3rd) row usually win against a rook without including kings to the fight. But this position is an exception – white is able to save the game because of very bad placement if black king.

1.Rf1! (otherwise black would promote a pawn this way 1…. b2 2.Rb5 a2 3.Rxb2 a1Q. The bad line would be this 1.Rf8? b2 2.Rg8+ Kh5 3.Kf5 b1Q+) b2 2.Rg1+ Kh5 3.Kf5 Kh4 4.Kf4 Kh3 5.Kf4 Kh4! (5…. Kh2?? 6.Rb1!+-) 6.Kf4 Kh3=

Black to move: 1…. f3+! 2.Rxf3 (2.Kh1 g2+ 3.Kxh2 gxf1B! or 3.gxf1N+) h1Q+ 3.Kxh1 Kxf3-+

Black to move

Both connected pawns are on the 3rd now. But black still needs to be very carefull!

1…. b2! (1…. c2? 2.Rxb3 Kd4 3.Rb4+ Kd5 4.Rb8!= c1Q? 5.Rd8+ Kc4 6.Rc8++-)) 2.Ke5! Kf3! 3.Kf5 Ke2! 3.Ke4 Kd1 4.Kd3 c2 5.Rh8 c1N+! -+

White to move / Black to move

White to move: 1.b6+- and black has no chance to prevent promoting the pawn.

Black to move: Black tries to prevent going the second pawn to the 6th row. 1…. Rc1! 2.Kf3 Rc5 3.Ke4 (3.c7 Rxc7 4.Ke4 Rb7) Rxb5 4.Kd4 Rb8 5.Kd5 Kf7 6.Kd6 Ke8 7.c7 Rc8 8.Kc6 Ke7 -+
